4 Ways to Make IKEA Furniture Look Old

all natural milk paint gives furniture an authentic aged patina

While I love old and reclaimed furniture, I was just as excited as everyone else when they announced that IKEA was coming to St. Louis. I had been watching fellow Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint retailers across the country host IKEA hack classes on the Bekvam stool, and I couldn't wait to get my hands on one. These natural wood stools are perfect for learning the basics of milk paint and how to make a new piece look old!

Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint is an all-natural, non-toxic paint. It loves raw wood and the new IKEA store in St. Louis offers a great selection of unfinished, raw wood projects. And, making these perfect pieces look like they've been around for ages is easy!

4 techniques to make ikea furniture look antiqued:

  • Water milk paint down and use it as a stain! Milk paint is excellent for giving raw, new wood a weathered, old look.
  • The Miss Mustard Seed color palette comes in 25 colors and they all look great together!  Add dimension to your piece by layering two colors and lightly distressing.
  • Want to give your project a "crazed" or crackle finish? Use a hair dryer or a heat gun while the paint is still wet and watch what happens!
  • Antiquing wax is a great way to give your project an authentic aged or "dirty" appearance.
